Junior Mustangs claim fourth straight Marmaduke Invitational title
Buffalo Island Central's Junior Mustangs won their fourth consecutive Marmaduke Invitational Tournament Championship with a 43-28 victory over the Greyhounds in Thursday night's finals.
The Mustangs held a slim 12-10 edge after the opening period before breaking away to take a 25-12 advantage at the half. BIC extended its lead to 38-22 after three quarters and cruised to the tournament title in the final frame.
Jesse Fry recorded a double-double, scoring 18 points while grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs. John Garrett Edwards contributed nine points, all on three pointers, while Tate Schooley had eight points and six assists.
"Overall, we played pretty well for only our second game of the year," said first year Coach Brandon Ballard. "I thought we did a lot of really good things, but most importantly, we played with tremendous effort and that's what I am most excited about. Winning this tournament is huge for our confidence."
In the girl's championship game, host Marmaduke remained undefeated with a 65-39 victory over Riverside, handing the Lady Rebels their first loss of the year.
The Lady Greyhounds placed four players in double digits, led by Emma Foster's 17 point performance. Karlie Gilliam scored 16, Reesa Hampton tallied 15 while Heidi Robinson chipped in 12 points. Grace Anne Pucket scored a game high 22 points to pace Riverside.
