Bay spoils Lady Rebels' season opener
Bay jumped out to a hot start and went on to defeat Riverside 51-42 in the season opener for the Lady Rebels Thursday night at Bay.
Haven Robertson gave Riverside its only lead of the night, 2-0, with an early bucket, but the Lady Yellowjackets answered with back to back treys from Whitlee Layne and Abby Frisbee and never trailed again.
Riverside suffered through a poor shooting night, knocking down only one triple, while Bay poured in six three point bombs on the night. The Lady Yellowjackets built a 16 point advantage in the second half before Riverside's full court press helped trim the Bay lead to six late in the game, but the Lady Rebels would get no closer.
Bay held a 17-8 lead after the first period and took a 29-22 edge into the dressing room at intermission. The Lady Yellowjackets led 42-26 entering the final frame.
Layne and Frisbee led Bay with 16 and 15 points respectively. Brittany Sain was the only Lady Rebel in double digits, scoring 11 points. Briley Douglas had six, Robertson, Lotti Hoffman and Whitney Wagganor all tallied five points apiece. Carson Smith netted four while Bailey Fisher and Mallory Felton chipped in three points each. Both teams struggled from the foul line, with Riverside hitting just 15-25 attempts, while Bay made 13-26.
In junior high action, Riverside blitzed Bay 50-21. Grace Ann Puckett and Carmen Campbell led the Lady Rebels with 14 points apiece. Alexis Courtney scored six, Autumn Courtney tallied four, Anna Meurer contributed three while Beaner Hoffman, Lexi Hall and Ashlyn Wright pitched in two points apiece.
Bailee Kirby led Bay with 10 points.
