Lady Rebels' Milligan and Brickell bring home state tennis doubles crown
The Lady Rebel duo of Hattie Milligan and Abby Brickell captured the 3A Girls Doubles Tennis Championship with a straight set 6-1, 6-2 victory over top seeded Meredith Headlee and Mckindley Mordon of Episcopal Collegiate Oct. 18 at Burns Park in North Little Rock.
Milligan and Brickell's win helped the Lady Rebels to a state runner-up finish, and their victory in the doubles finals gave Riverside its 28th state title in tennis.
Riverside also brought home a state runner-up finish in boys play. The duo of Gavin Stone and Jon Milligan finished second in the doubles finals, losing a 6-4, 6-1 decision to the Episcopal Collegiate pair of Ethan Strauss and Sydney Dassinger.
Riverside's Bailey Fisher and McKenna Beach reached the tournament semifinals before dropping a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Headlee and Mordon.
In singles play, Lotti Hoffman dropped a first round decision to Anne Marie De Luca, 6-0, 6-2.
Riverside's Braden Overman and Zach Poe advanced to the semifinals before losing to the eventual champions, Strauss and Dassinger, 6-2, 6-3.
In singles play, Hunter Rand advanced to the quarterfinals while Dylan Austin dropped a close three set match in the first round to Hunter Dann of McGehee.
"We knew it would be tough going in to the state tournament," said Riverside Coach Terry Conner. "We knew Episcopal Collegiate has a very good team. The kids played as hard as they could. I was very proud of them. Hattie and Abby were outstanding. Our other doubles team, McKenna and Bailey, also played well. We had a lot of good entries on the boys side. We have the majority of our girls back; unfortunately, most of our boys are seniors. We'll have to pick up and start over again, but we'll be fine. I was very happy with our performance."
