Chili cook-off draws large crowd
It was perfect weather for the 30th annual Manila Chili Cook-off held Saturday, Oct. 8. The event is sponsored each year by the Manila Lions Club. The large crowd enjoyed sampling a variety of chili from 22 junior and senior cooking teams.
Vending booths, games, horseback rides, drawings, inflatables for the kids, drawings and entertainment made the day a success.
Judy Hampton and Tommy Morries provided entertainment throughout the day.
The annual FFA Miss Mess was held with six contestants. "Carrie" (Garrett Jolliff) took the crown for the second year. First runner up was "Jimma" (Grant Salzer) with second runner up "Lilly" Logan Hamilton.
Manila Business Women served breakfast at the Depot and held a pumpkin decorating booth.
Lion members Matt Noble and Wendell Poteet presented trophies and cash prizes to the 2016 winners.
Team winners were:
Senior division: Pappy Chili (Kent Moore), first place; American Legion, second place; and Towell and Sons Auto, third place.
Junior division: Chili Commandos, first place; Guys Cooking Chili, second place.
The People's Choice award went to the Manila FFA Holy Jalapenos Team. Showmanship award went to Southern Bancorp.
Noble expressed his appreciation to the community for their support and sponsorship, teams and vendors for a great event.
Nolan Finley was the winner of the television given away by Howard Funeral Service. All proceeds from the drawing went to the Lions Club.
Wilson Dental gave away two tee shirts, won by Peggy Brewer and Ashley Baugher, and $100 won by Amanda Casey.
Charley Casey was the winner of $100 given away by Towell and Sons Autos.
The Razorback basket given away by the Southern Bancorp Relay for Life Team was won by Steve Adda.
Shirley Minirth won a gift basket donated by Fred Fleeman.
The 50-50 drawing by the Manila Business Women was won by Larry Brown.
Sarah Riddick won the gift basket given away by the Manila Fire Department.
