Hoxie outlasts Junior Lions 20-8

Corey Cain's 30-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter broke an 8-8 tie and propelled Hoxie to a 20-8 victory over Manila in 3A-3 junior high football action Thursday night at Mustang Field.

Cain added a 16-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Hayden Riggs on the first play of the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

The Mustangs drew first blood early in the second period when Manila's Carter Walker was tackled in the end zone, giving Hoxie a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs scored again with 4:46 left before halftime when Riggs darted in from six yards out. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Mustangs with an 8-0 halftime advantage.

The Lions got on the board with 6:29 left in the third quarter on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Walker. Walker set up the touchdown by rambling 52 yards down to the Mustang four. Alex Estell raced in with the two point try, squaring the game 8-8.

Walker finished with over 100 yards rushing and completed two passes for 74 yards, including a 50-yarder to Hayden Kirk.

Manila will return to action Thursday night, playing host to Corning in another 3A-3 conference battle. Game time is 7 p.m.
