BIC claims district golf championship

Buffalo Island Central Mustangs claim District Golf Championship.

The Mustangs are the 2A-2 district golf champions once again! Buffalo Island Central fired a team score of 233 in the play-four, count-three event held Tuesday at the Turkey Mountain Golf Club in Horseshoe Bend. Marmaduke came in second with a 318 total while Salem was third, shooting a score of 338.

Trey DePriest posted a three over 76 to claim medalist honors for the Mustangs. Dax Hurst was a shot back of his teammate, carding a 77. Miles Gifford finished with an 80.

In the girls district, Salem took the title with a 322 score. BIC and Marmaduke tied for second, with the Lady Mustangs edging the Lady Greyhounds in a playoff to advance to the state tournament.

Kensie Walker led BIC with a 116. Jona Carmichael posted a 133 while Lauren Peel shot a 134. Salem's Bailey York was the medalist, shooting a 105.

The 2A girls state tournament will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Thunder Bayou in Blytheville. The 2A boys state tourney will begin Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Camden Country Club.

BIC competed in the Hurricane Classic Sept. 17 at the Jonesboro County Club. The Mustangs finished runner-up to host Jonesboro in a loaded field. The Hurricanes won the match with a 292 score. While the Mustangs were second at 317. All competing schools were 5A or larger with the exception of BIC.

Hurst fired a two-over par 73 to finish third individually. DePriest had a four-over 75 while Gifford shot an 81. Andrew McFarlin carded an 88 in the play-five, count-four event.

BIC won a five team match Sept. 12 at the Big Lake Country Club in Manila, firing a 116. DePriest scorched the course, shooting a two-under 34. Hurst posted a 40 while Gifford had a 42.

Joel Burrow carded a 41 to lead second place Manila, who had a team score of 128. Cade Cater shot 43 for the Lions while Brock Birmingham came home with a 44.

Riverside was represented by Larry Tilley. Tilley carded a 46 while Preston Nichols shot a 47.

In girls play, Walker led BIC with a 51 to take medalist honors. The Lady Mustangs won the event with a 178 team score. Carmichael and Peel shot 58 and 69 respectively.

Jozalyn Keys led runner-up Manila with a 57. Allie Edwards shot a 63 for the Lady Lions while Presley Pierce had a 66.

The Mustangs competed Sept. 8 at Thunder Bayou and came in with a winning team score of 111. DePriest scored the second hole-in-one of his young career on the par three number 14 hole, using a 54-degree wedge. DePriest finished as medalist, firing an even par 36. Andy Milligan posted a one over 37 while McFarlin shot a 38.

Tilley and Hayden Carr led Riverside with scores of 43 while Nichols shot a 44 as the Rebels finished with a team score of 130.
