Greyhounds' speed overwhelms Junior Lions 52-8
Newport used its superior speed to race past Manila 52-8 in junior high football action Thursday night at Lion Field. Monquell Cox scored three first half touchdowns, including one on a 55-yard punt return, as the Greyhounds built a 40-0 halftime advantage.
Cox put Newport on the board early, 6-0, with a 50-yard touchdown scamper. The speedy running back added a 21-yard touchdown gallop later in the first period, increasing the Greyhound advantage to 12-0.
Quarterback Tharon Davis hooked up with Clemmie Alcorn on a 15-yard touchdown pass, pushing the Newport lead to 18-0.
Cox fielded a punt at the Newport 45 and rambled through and around the Lions on his way to the end zone, capping off a 55-yard return for Newport's fourth score of the opening period. Cox added the two-point conversion run, giving the Greyhounds a 26-0 lead.
Jammerial Balentine tacked on two more scores for the Greyhounds in the second quarter while Donavon Biggers added a 55-yard touchdown run as the visitors took a 40-point cushion into the dressing room at the half.
Manila finally got on the board in the second half when quarterback Garrett Hart darted into the end zone from 24 yards out. The Lions added the two-point conversion.
Davis capped off the scoring on the night, returning the ensuing kickoff by the Lions 70 yards for a touchdown.
Manila, 0-3, will try to pick up its first victory of the season next Thursday night in their conference opener against Walnut Ridge. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lion Field.
