Childress classmates gather

Former Childress High School classmates filled the Buffalo Island Central West Elementary Saturday, Sept. 3, for their "Convocation of Eagles" reunion from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The former Childress School was located north of Monette on Highway 139 and had students attending classes there from 1921-1961. Childress consolidated with Monette High School in 1961, and Monette consolidated with Leachville in 1984 to form Buffalo Island Central.

Classmates, teachers and school staff were honored during the reunion. Clyann Leonard presented CHS book bags for family attendance, traveling and age. The Yates family had the largest amount of CHS classmates in attendance, which included Thelma, Jerry, Doris and J.D. Yates. Betty Calloway and Martha Baldridge were the oldest teachers in attendance. Oldest CHS graduates included Bonnie Adams, Irvin Cobbs, Amanda Copeland, Frances Adams, Martha Baldridge and Betty Calloway. Oldest classmate attending not go on to graduate was Bob Carroll. Classmate traveling the farthest to attend the reunion was Joe Roy Harrell of Downingtown, Pa.

The Yates family had the most siblings attending the reunion, and included Thelma, Jerry, Doris and J.D. Yates.

Pat Hawkins introduced the special entertainment, which included Ken Long, Penny Wamsley, and the "Senior Supremes" Karen Wallace, Brenda Gulley, Janice Robbins, Susie McAfee and Ann Nuckles.

American Legion Post Commander Larry Rolland led the pledge to the flag. W.T. Bibb and Bill Craig posted the colors, and Dick Pace played Taps during the salute of the veterans.

Planning Committee Chairman Raye Finley lit a memorial candle for deceased classmates and William Piercy led the memorial service. CHS Scholarship winner for 2016 Hannah Harrell expressed her appreciation for the scholarship and told of her college plans. The financial report was presented by Finley. The yearbook, CHS Memorial Marker, and Veterans Park reports were given by Committee Secretary Nan Snider. Group class photos were taken throughout the day.

Ken Long provided vocal entertainment for the reunion.

Proceeds from the silent auction raised money for scholarships and was led by Jenny Yates, Sandra Pylant and Millie Wimberley.

Desserts and water were provided by classmates throughout the day, and students from BIC Junior High worked as servers. Bigg Butts BBQ of Leachville provided the reunion meal.

The CHS Reunion Committee in attendance led the classmates in singing the school alma mater at the close of the reunion. Committee members included W.T. Bibb, Raye Craig Finley, Norma Woodsmall Gathright, Brenda Hinson Gulley, Ernestine Ray Harrell, Pat Woodsmall Hawkins, Glenda Allen Latting, Wayne Latting, Clyann Swetnam Leonard, Susie Harrell McAfee, Ann Wimpy Nuckles, Danny Nuckles, Sandra Grant Pylant, William Piercy, Kaye Craig Ray, Wayne Ray, Alvis Snider, Nan Harrell Snider, Bill Stacy, Jerrie Lackey Stacy and Millie Hout Wimberley.

The next CHS reunion is scheduled for Aug. 31, 2019.
