Brookland rolls over junior Lions 32-8
Brookland scored on two of its first three offensive plays and went on to pound Manila 32-8 in junior high football action Friday night at Bearcat Field.
The Bearcats scored on their second play from scrimmage when fullback Brayden Haff bolted through the heart of the Lion defense and galloped 57 yards for the touchdown, just one minute into the game. Kaden Strode tacked on the two point conversion run, giving the host an early 8-0 advantage.
The Lions picked up a first down on their initial possession, but were forced to punt, giving the ball back to the Bearcats at the Lion 41 yard line. Strode took a handoff and sprinted down the left sidelines into the end zone for the second Brookland touchdown. Haff's two point conversion put Brookland on top 16-0 with 2:27 left in the opening period.
Manila moved into Bearcat territory on its next possession with an 11 yard run by quarterback Garrett Hart, but the freshman signal caller was picked off by linebacker Trent Still, who raced 58 yards for another Brookland score with just 15 seconds left in the quarter. Ty Collinsworth bulled into the end zone for the two point conversion, putting the Bearcats up 24-0.
The Bearcats added a 15-yard scoring run by Nathan Stephens, and got a safety with just seconds left in the second quarter to give Brookland a 32-0 halftime lead.
Manila got on the board in the fourth quarter when Alex Estell rambled 42 yards. Hart added the two point conversion, setting the final score at 32-8.
The Lions will return to action Thursday night when they play their home opener against Trumann. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
