Lions state tournament bound
Manila rode the strong pitching performance of Brett Sweatman to defeat Valley Springs 4-1 in first round action of the 3A-3 regional baseball tournament Thursday at Harrison. The win gives the Lions a spot in this week's state tournament at Smackover where Manila will face off against Greenland in first round action Thursday at 12:30.
The Lions broke a 1-1 tie with Valley Springs, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on Abraham Lopez' RBI single. Manila got two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Joel Burrow belted a two-run single. Sweatman had a two-hit day, going 2-3, including a double and an RBI. Layne Sims and Brock Birmingham both had two hits while Levi Stroud added a single. Sweatman worked six innings, allowing just one run on only three hits. The junior right hander fanned six and walked three. Lopez picked up the save with one inning of shutout ball. Lopez gave up one hit and struck out two.
Manila lost to Corning 4-3 in Friday's semifinals. The Lions led 3-2 entering the seventh inning, but the Bobcats scored twice to rally for the win. Lopez went the distance to take the loss, allowing four runs, three earned. Lopez surrendered nine hits, fanned eight and walked two.
Lopez, Burrow and Birmingham all had RBI singles for the Lions. Brady Clark had a 2-4 day while Sims, Jeremiah Perez and Stroud all singled.
The Lions took Saturday's third place game with a 4-3 victory over Mountain View.
