Rebels clinch conference title with doubleheader sweep of Cross County
Riverside clinched the 2A-3 conference baseball championship with a doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon over Cross County. The Rebels took the opener 19-0 before completing the twin-killing with a 17-2 victory in the nightcap.
Dillon Turner delivered a complete game three-hit shutout to win the opener. Turner fanned five and walked a pair. Turner and Larry Tilley both had three hits and two RBI apiece while scoring two runs each. One of Tilley's hits was a double. Cannon Smith belted a single, a double and drove in four runs while Gavin Stone went 2-2 with three RBI and four runs scored. Izzy Garcia singled, doubled and scored three times. Dylan Austin had an RBI single and scored a run. Charlie McClure and Chandler Tate both scored once and had an RBI each.
Garcia earned the victory in the second game, pitching three innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Garcia was the star at the plate as well, going 3-4, including a double and a triple, while driving home six runs. The sophomore pitcher also scored three times. Tilley singled, doubled, drove in a pair and scored three runs. Turner cracked a pair of singles, drove in a run and scored twice while Stone had a two-run single with a run scored. Smith and Tate had RBI singles and crossed the plate once each. Justin Berry belted a two-run single and scored a run. Austin and Hayden Carr both singled and scored one run apiece while McClure scored three runs.
The Rebels clobbered East Poinsett County 12-2 Wednesday at Lake City. Tilley earned the win, pitching five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Tilley fanned seven and walked two. Smith cranked out a pair of doubles, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead Riverside at the plate. Fraser singled, doubled, had two RBI and scored a run. Tilley hammered a pair of two-run singles and scored twice. Turner walloped a two-run double and scored two runs. Garcia had an RBI single with a run scored while Tate and Luke Baker both singled and scored a run apiece. Austin also crossed the plate once.
The Rebels completed the conference season undefeated with a 9-1 rout of Rector Thursday on the road. McClure worked six innings of five-hit, no-run ball to pick up the win. McClure struck out seven and walked four. Stone pitched one inning, allowing two hits and a run. Fraser singled, doubled and tripled, finishing one hit shy of the cycle while scoring a pair of runs. Turner clubbed a pair of singles and added a double while driving in a run. McClure went 3-3 with a run scored. Garcia singled, doubled, scored twice and had two RBI. Stone singled, doubled, scored twice, drove in a run and had a pair of walks while Smith singled and scored a run. Tate also touched the plate once.
Riverside (18-3, 12-0) will host Pangburn Tuesday to close out the regular season before entering this weekend's 2A-3 district tournament as the number one seed.
