Lady Lions hold on to first place in 3A-3
Manila Lady Lions kept their stranglehold on first place in the 3A-3 conference with victories over Piggott and Hoxie last week The Lady Lions, 14-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in league play, knocked off Piggott 6-3 Monday on the road before handing Hoxie an 18-2, 10-3 doubleheader loss Tuesday afternoon at Hoxie.
Manila scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead over the Lady Mohawks, but Piggott rallied, scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth to grab a one run lead. Manila came back, scoring two times in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the come from behind win.
Jordyn Wheeler earned the victory, working seven innings, allowing three unearned runs. The junior pitcher scattered six hits and struck out six.
Wheeler and Sasha Pannells both went 2-3 with an RBI each. Pannells scored twice while Wheeler crossed the plate once. Lauren Woody slashed a pair of singles and scored a run while Mollie Beth Couch also laced two singles and drove in a run. Caitlin Holt cracked a run-scoring double, Madison Bibbs had a run scoring single while Tessa Pannells singled and scored twice.
Manila scored five first inning runs and tacked on eight more in the fourth as the Lady Lions had little trouble winning the first game of the twinbill against Hoxie. Wheeler worked four innings to earn the victory, allowing two runs on five hits.
Woody and Wheeler both had 3-3 days at the plate. Woody's hits were all doubles. The senior shortstop also drove in three runs and scored twice. Wheeler had an RBI and crossed the plate four times. Taylor Hampton went 2-2, including a double, scored a pair of runs and added an RBI. Senior Kelsea Moore belted a two-run double and scored a run. Beth Rawson had a two-run single and scored once while Tessa Pannells hammered an RBI single. Sasha Pannells cracked a run-scoring double and scored twice. Ashley Rothwell and Jill Helton both singled. Rothwell scored a run while Helton crossed home plate two times. Bibbs, Couch and Holt all scored one run apiece. Manila scored 10 runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the Lady Mustangs in the nightcap.
Manila returns to action Monday afternoon with a road trip to Rivercrest. The Lady Lions will travel to Armorel Thursday for a nonconference game before closing the week at home Friday afternoon against league opponent Corning.
