Lions gain road victories at Piggott and Marion
Manila squared its record at 8-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play with victories over Piggott and Marion last week. The Lions destroyed the Mohawks 16-2 Monday afternoon at Piggott before getting past Marion 6-2 Friday afternoon on the road.
Brett Sweatman, Brock Birmingham and Layne Sims had two hits apiece against the Mohawks. Sweatman and Birmingham both drove in three runs each while scoring one run apiece. Sims had an RBI and scored a run. Joel Burrow had a three-run double and scored twice. Brady Clark belted a two-run single and scored a run while Ethan Navarro banged out a run scoring single while crossing the plate once. Jeremiah Perez scored three times and had an RBI. Abraham Lopez scored a run and drove in a run while Levi Stroud, Hunter Tarver and Grant Salzer all scored runs for the Lions. Lopez gained the win, pitching five innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs, none earned. Lopez walked three and struck out eight.
The Lions scored three times in the third inning and tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh in defeating Marion in nonconference action. Sweatman worked four innings to gain the win, allowing just one hit and one earned run. The right hander fanned five and walked six. Lopez hurled three shutout innings to gain the save.
Sweatman singled, doubled and drove in a run. Stroud also had a single and a double with one run scored and an RBI. Birmingham had an RBI triple and scored once. Perez bashed an RBI double and scored a run while Burrow, Clark and Navarro all added singles. Lopez drove in a run. Michael Parker and Salzer scored one run each.
Manila returns to the diamond Monday afternoon with a road game at Marked Tree. The Lions return to conference play Tuesday afternoon with a home game against Corning before closing the week with a nonconference road trip to Westside.
