Lady Lions add to victory total

Lady Lion soft-ballers won three out of four games last week to push their record to 11-7 overall and 3-1 in 3A-3 conference play. Manila began the week with a 7-0 shutout of conference rival Corning on the road. The Lady Lions fell to Walnut Ridge 8-2 Tuesday afternoon before bouncing back to edge Highland 3-1 on Thursday. Manila ended the week with a 7-5 nonconference win Friday over Gosnell.

Jordyn Wheeler threw a three-hit complete game shutout in Manila's win at Corning. The junior right hander fanned eight and walked three. Wheeler also helped herself at the plate with a pair of singles and a run scored. Tessa Pannells had a big day at the plate, going 3-4 including an RBI triple. Lauren Woody ripped a two-run double, added a single and scored twice. Mollie Beth Couch blasted an RBI double and scored a run while Ashley Rothwell had an RBI single. Caitlin Holt singled and scored a run while Sasha Pannells scored once.

Walnut Ridge scored three times in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat Manila 8-2. Wheeler went the distance and absorbed the loss, giving up eight runs, five earned on nine hits. Wheeler struck out eight and walked a pair of batters. Sasha Pannells cranked an RBI triple, singled and scored once while Holt added an RBI single. Jill Helton singled and scored a run while Tessa Pannells and Wheeler both had base knocks.

Wheeler scattered seven hits, allowing just one run, to earn the win in Manila's 3-1 victory over Highland. Wheeler struck out nine Lady Rebels. Couch singled, doubled and scored a run while Woody and Tessa Pannells both drilled RBI doubles. Holt laced an RBI single. Wheeler singled while Helton scored a run.

Manila scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Gosnell 7-5 Friday. Wheeler picked up the win, working seven innings, allowing nine hits, five runs, three earned, while fanning six and walking two. Wheeler also came up big at the plate with a single, a double, a triple and an RBI while scoring twice. Rothwell also had three hits, including a two-run double and scored a run. Tessa Pannells banged out a two-run double while Couch cracked a run-scoring single and scored a run. Woody, Holt and Taylor Hampton all crossed the plate once.

Manila returns to action Monday afternoon with a conference road trip to Piggott before going to Hoxie for another 3A-3 matchup on Tuesday.
