Stone strikes out 11 in win over EPC
Gavin Stone struck out 11 batters last Tuesday as Riverside squeaked out a 2-1 win over EPC in high school baseball action in Lepanto.
Matthew Fraser flew out for Riverside to open the game as Izzy Garcia followed with a fly out. Stone drew a two-out walk only to be left stranded when Larry Tilley flew out. Kyler Gordon walked to open EPC's half of the first inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Trevor Walker struck out before Clay Malone doubled to score Gordon making it 1-0 Warriors.
Peyton Phillips singled to put runners on the corner before he was thrown out at second trying to steal the base. Chanc Gray struck out looking for the Warriors to end the inning.
The Rebels went three up three down in the top of second as Dillon Turner flew out, Cannon Smith popped out and Charlie McClure stuck out. EPC also went down in order as Brandon Smith, Austin Smith and Hayden Tucker all struck out to keep the score 1-0 after two innings of play.
Chandler Tate grounded out and Dylan Austin popped out for two quick outs for Riverside before Fraser drew a two-out walk only to be left stranded when Garcia flew out to end the top half of the third inning. Stone set EPC down in order again as Hayden Allen popped out, Gordon struck out looking and Walker grounded out as the score stayed 1-0 EPC.
Riverside tied the game in the top of fourth inning as Stone singled to lead off and stole second base to get in scoring position. Tilley doubled down the left field line to score Stone making it 1-1. Turner flew out and Smith struck out before McClure walked putting two runners on base. Tate hit into a fielder's choice grounder that forced McClure out at second base. EPC went down in order for the third time as Malone grounded out as Phillips and Gray each stuck out keeping the score 1-1 after four.
Austin grounded out to start Riverside's half of the fifth inning before Fraser walked and stole second base. Garcia flew out as Stone reached second on an EPC error that allowed Fraser to score making it 2-1 Riverside. Brandon Smith went down swinging to start the bottom of the fifth for EPC as Austin Smith reached on an error. Tucker popped out and Allen's ground ball forced Austin Smith at second to end the inning with the score still 2-1 Rebels.
Riverside went down in order in the top of sixth as Turner was caught looking for strike three before Smith and McClure both grounded out keeping the score 2-1 Riverside. Gordon singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth for EPC only to stray to far off base getting picked off after a short rundown. Walker struck out swinging and Malone popped out ending the sixth with the Rebels up 2-1.
The Rebels went down in order in the top of the seventh as Tate flew out, Austin struck out and Fraser flew out to end the top half of the inning. Phillips flew out for the first out for EPC in the bottom of the seventh as Gary struck out for out number two. Brandon Smith walked before getting picked off by Stone to end the game with Riverside winning 2-1.
Stone got the win for Riverside giving up a run on three hits in seven innings of work. He walked two and truck out 11 batters. Tilley and Stone each had a hit as Fraser and Stone both scored a run. Tilley had the teams only RBI of the game.
Malone took the loss for EPC giving two runs on two hit over seven innings. He walked four and struck out four. Malone, Phillips and Gordon all collected a hit each as Gordon scored a run and Malone had the team only RBI.
