Gymnast Claire Jackson qualifies for USA Region 3 Championship
Claire Jackson, 10 year old daughter of Randall and Leigh Jackson, will be competing in the USA Gymnastics Region 3 Championships in April.
Claire, a fourth grade student at Buffalo Island Central, has been in gymnastics since she was two years old and loves the competition. Her favorite of the four events she competes in is the floor routine. She also competes in the balance beam, bars and vault.
She placed high enough in the state competition to go on to compete in the Region 3 Championship.
She admits she is a little nervous as the Region 3 Championship is a "huge" event.
Claire will represent Arkansas and will compete against Level 7 gymnasts her age from Texas, Kansas, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado.
She trains every day at Champions Gymnastic Center in Paragould preparing for the upcoming competition.
Dr. Kima Stewart, BIC West principal, said Claire is a well rounded young lady and even though she stays busy with her practice, she is a straight A student and is involved in several extracurricular activities. She is part of the Gifted and Talented, student government, on the math team, and stays active in the First Methodist Church in Leachville.
Math is her favorite subject. She is on a math team that recently competed in competition at Christian Brothers College in Memphis. She said the fourth grade team did well and finished in the top five in their grade division. Students took individual tests and team tests.
"It was the first time for BIC to be a part of the math competition and it was a great experience," Claire said.
Claire said she receives a lot of encouragement from her parents, teachers and Mrs. Kima.
She has a goal to keep her grades high and continue in gymnastics because she plans to go to college at Florida State University on a gymnastic/academic scholarship.
"They are ranked number two," Claire said.
Claire is the youngest of the three Jackson siblings. She has an older brother, Will, and an older sister, Haleigh. Haleigh is on the BIC junior high cheer squad.
