Riverside opened its 2016 baseball season with a 10-1 drubbing of Trumann Saturday afternoon at Lake City.
Gavin Stone hurled five innings of one-run baseball to pick up the win. Stone struck out six Wildcats on the day. Stone also helped himself at the plate, going 2-4, while scoring a pair of runs.
Matt Fraser went 2-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Larry Tilley had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Dillon Turner and Luke Baker both finished 2-3 at the plate and drove in one run apiece.
Buffalo Island Central dropped a 7-6 squeaker to Corning Saturday afternoon at Monette while the Lady Mustangs fell to Trumann 17-1 in high school softball action. Holly Stockton's RBI single drove in Lexi Walls, who doubled, for BIC's only run on the day.
The season gets into full swing this week. In baseball action, Manila plays host to Marked Tree Monday before taking on Wynne Tuesday afternoon, also at Lion Field. Riverside will travel to BIC Tuesday before playing host to East Poinsett County Thursday afternoon in a pair of 2A-3 conference games.
On the softball field, Manila hosts Senath-Hornersville Monday, travels to Nettleton Tuesday, journeys to BIC Thursday before wrapping up the week by hosting Blytheville Friday afternoon. The Lady Rebels host East Poinsett County in conference play Thursday afternoon. BIC will host a pair of nonconference games beginning Monday against Armorel before closing the week against Westside.
