Mustangs open NEA with 36 point rout of Maynard

Buffalo Island Central outscored Maynard 16-1 to close out the first quarter and went on to stampede the Tigers 67-31 in the opening round of the 69th Annual Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament last Monday night at the Convocation Center on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.

The Mustangs held an 8-7 edge at the 4:36 mark of the opening stanza before scoring 16 straight points, including eight from junior Trey DePriest and six from senior guard Travon Cobb. BIC increased its lead in the second quarter to 31-8 when Cobb ripped a trey at the 6:31 mark, capping off a 24-1 run which began in the first period. Three point bombs by Dax Hurst and Chayse Carmichael, followed by baskets from Cobb and Canon Walling pushed the BIC advantage to a whopping 43-15 at the half.

DePriest scored on back to back field goals to give the Mustangs a 30 point cushion with 5:19 left in the third quarter, invoking the mercy rule, and BIC coasted into the second round in their bid for an NEA title.

DePriest topped the Mustangs with 19 points while Cobb added 16 more. Andrew McFarlin scored eight, Carmichael, Hurst and Jace Couch tallied six points apiece, Walling had four while Logan Harrison chipped in two points. BIC finished with eight three pointers on the night.

Dylan Powell led Maynard with nine points.

The Mustangs played Marked Tree in Monday's quarterfinals with the winner advancing to Wednesday night's 7:30 semifinals.
