Fourth quarter collapse costly for Junior Lions in tournament finals

Manila Jr. Lions took second place in Bay Invitational Tournament.

Manila was outscored 13-5 in the fourth quarter falling to Bay 43-34 in the boys championship game this past Saturday in the Bay Invitational Junior High Tournament.

Manila's Jeremiah Perez opened the scoring with a basket inside and was followed by Brock Birmingham drilling a three-pointer giving the Junior Lions an early 5-0 lead. Bay's Dax Gibson scored on a driving lay up to make it 5-2 before Birmingham scored inside to make the score 7-2 Manila. Gibson hit two free throws with just over a minute left in the first quarter to make it 7-5 Junior Lions. The score stayed the same at the end of the quarter.

Abraham Lopez scored on a lay up for Manila to start the second quarter scoring before Bay got two free throws from Zach Hampton and a conventional three-point play from Gibson to tie the game at 9. Daley Belew hit a jumper for Manila and Layne Austin answered with two free throws making the score 11-11. Belew canned a pair of three-pointers around an inside basket by Bay's Gibson to make the score 17-13 Manila.

Hampton drilled a three-ball for the Junior Yellowjackets before Perez hit one of two free throws for the Junior Lions and Gibson made one of two free throws for Bay making it 18-17 Manila. Layne Sims scored back to back baskets for Manila with giving the Junior Lions a 22-17 lead with less than a minute before half. Bay got two free throws from Layne Austin and a fast break lay up from Matthew Willard to cut the Manila lead to 22-20 at halftime.

Willard tied the score for Bay at 22 with an inside basket to start the third quarter. Trenton Thomas netted a three-pointer giving Manila a 25-22 lead before Gibson converted an old-school three-pointer for Bay to tie the score at 25. Sims hit two free throws for the Junior Lions making it 27-25 only to see Gibson's two free throws for the Junior 'Jackets tie the game back up at 27-27. Abraham Lopez gave Manila the lead at 29-27 with a basket off an offensive rebound as Gibson answered for Bay with two free throws tying the game again at 29-29. The quarter ended with the score tied at 29.

Gibson drilled a three-pointer for Bay to start the fourth quarter for a 32-29 Bay lead. Abraham Lopez scored again off an offensive rebound for Manila to make it 32-31 before Austin scored back to back buckets for Bay making the score 36-31.

Manila's coach was whistled for a technical foul but Austin missed both free throws to keep the score at 36-31 Bay. Hampton increased Bay's lead to 38-31 with two free throws before Belew's three-pointer cut the lead to 38-34 with 38 seconds left in the game. Gibson scored inside for Bay and added two free throws with four seconds left setting the final score at 42-34 Junior Yellowjackets.

Belew led Manila in scoring with 11 points followed by Abraham Lopez and Sims with six points each, Birmingham with five points and Lopez and Thomas with three points each.

Bay's Gibson led all scorers with 24 points as Hampton and Austin each finished with seven points. Willard chipped in four points for the Junior 'Jackets.
