Junior Lions close out 2015 season with 44-28 victory over Corning
Manila's talented backfield duo of Layne Sims and Brett Carter ran roughshod over Corning, combining for 335 yards on the ground in leading the Lions to a 44-28 season ending victory over the Bobcats in junior high football action Thursday night at Lion Field.
Sims and Carter combined for five touchdowns on the night. Sims carried 12 times for 173 yards and three scores while Carter ran 12 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions piled up 435 yards total offense, all on the ground.
Manila took an early 8-0 lead on a five yard touchdown scamper by Sims. Sims added the two point conversion run.
Corning's Colby Lucas answered with a three yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, slicing Manila's lead to 8-6. Corning's two point conversion attempt failed.
The Lions came right back when Sims galloped 46 yards into the end zone with 7:11 left in the half. Carter tacked on the two point conversion and the Lions led 16-6.Carter added Manila's third score of the first half, running over three Bobcat defenders on his way to a 54-yard touchdown burst. Sims slashed into the end zone for the two point play and a 24-6 Lion halftime lead.
Manila opened the third period with a 12 play, 63-yard scoring drive, capped off by Carter's one yard plunge. The two point conversion attempt failed.
Beau Young fielded the ensuing kickoff and darted 80 yards for a Corning touchdown, cutting the Lion lead to 30-12 at the 3:00 minute mark of the third quarter.
Manila scored again when Sims scrambled into the end zone from 26 yards out at the 1:56 mark. Carter's two point run upped the Lion lead to 38-12 entering the fourth period.
The Bobcats got a pair of fourth quarter scores on an eight yard run by Jordan Smith and an eight yard scamper by Cole Guthrie while Manila's Levi Stroud hit pay dirt on a 17-yard run for Manila's final score of the night. Stroud finished with five carries for 22 yards. Dalton Pasley had five rushes for 50 yards while Dylan Clark carries two times for 28.
Corning finished with 207 yards total offense, led by Lucas who rushed 17 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. Smith finished the night with five carries for 78 yards and a touchdown.
The victory ended Manila's season at 3-6 overall and 3-4 in 3A-3 conference play.
