Mustang golfers capture Class 2A State Championship
Buffalo Island Central dominated the Class 2A State Golf Championship, firing a winning score of 246 to claim the state title Tuesday at the Holiday Island Golf Course in Eureka Springs. It marked BIC's second state championship in the past three years.
The Mustangs finished a comfortable 16 shots ahead of runner-up Spring Hill, who completed their day with a 262 score. BIC's Trey DePriest, Dax Hurst and Miles Gifford all carded scores in the 80s and were named All-State. DePriest's round of 80 was good enough for second behind medalist Kade Scott of Rector, who posted a winning score of 79. Hurst fired an 82 while Gifford came in with a round of 84. Andrew McFarlin also competed and shot a 90.
BIC finished the season with an overall record of 53-9 and also claimed the 2A-3 District Championship.
"We went down to the tournament, anticipating a two-way battle between us and Spring Hill," said Mustang Golf Coach Carey Cossey. "As fate would have it, we matched up with them and were fortunate enough to come out on top. We got behind after the first 10 holes, but kicked it into gear on the back nine and were able to pull ahead of them. I am proud of the boys. They did a real good job on a very tough course."
Riverside's Larry Tilley also participated and carded a score of 98.
