Mustangs pick up wins in area golf action

Buffalo Island Central completed an undefeated week on the golf links, posting a first place finish over four other teams Monday afternoon at the Big Lake County Club in Manila, before winning a tri-match Tuesday afternoon at Trumann.

Trey DePriest claimed medalist honors, firing an even par 36 to lead BIC to Monday's victory. The Mustangs finished with a team score of 113, twenty-six shots better than runner-up Manila. Riverside took third, shooting a 154. Rector came in fourth with a 137 while Crowley's Ridge Academy posted a 188 score to finish in fifth place.

Dax Hurst shot a two-over par 38 while Miles Gifford carded a three-over score of 39 for the Mustangs. Andrew McFarlin shot a 42 for BIC.

Manila was led by Joel Burrow, who finished with a 41. Burch Milano and Brock Birmingham both carded 49s as the Lions tallied a 139 team score.

Larry Tilley led the Rebels with a 47 while Cannon Smith and Caden Barrett shot rounds of 50 and 57 respectively.

Gifford claimed medalist honors for BIC in Tuesday's tri-match victory, shooting a two-over par 38 as the Mustangs fired a winning team score of 121. DePriest carded a 40 while Hurst and McFarlin completed rounds of 43 and 46 respectively.

In girl's action, Ashley Field fired a 47 to take medalist honors Monday afternoon in Manila. Kensie Walker shot a 53 while Jona Carmichael finished with a 65.

Loren Davison fired a 68 for Manila while Brittney Ditto finished with a 72 for Riverside.

Field also claimed medalist honors Tuesday afternoon, shooting a 48. Walker and Carmichael both carded rounds of 55.

The Mustangs began the golf season Tuesday, Aug. 4, winning a tri-match over Manila and Marmaduke. BIC combined for a team score of 128 to defeat second place Manila by 10 shots. Marmaduke came in third with a 157 team total.

Hurst was the medalist on the day, shooting a five-over par 41. Gifford shot a 42 while McFarlin and Evan Sanders both carded rounds of 45.

Birmingham paced the Lions with a round of 44 while Burrow and Milano finished with scores of 46 and 48 respectively.

BIC also competed in the Blazer Invitational at the Ridgepoint Country Club in Jonesboro on Thursday, Aug. 6. Hurst led the Mustangs with a two-under par 71 to finish just one shot out of medalist honors, as BIC ended with a 339 team score, good for third place. Gifford and McFarlin carded rounds of 87. Andy Milligan shot a 94 while Sanders posted a 109 in the play-five, count-four event.

Searcy took home team honors, firing a score of 301 in the 11 team competition. Drew Castleberry shot a three-under 70 to lead Searcy to the victory, sharing medalist honors with Collierville's Web DeWitt. The host Blazers finished runner-up with a 323 score.

Searcy also took first place in girls play with a winning score of 161. BIC finished second, 13 shots back. Field led the Lady Mustangs with a nine-hole score of 53 while Carmichael and Walker tallied rounds of 60 and 61 respectively. Elizabeth Moon of Wynne fired a three-over par 39 to take medalist honors.

Field edged Walker by one shot to claim medalist honors in Monday's match at Manila. Field carded a 53 while Walker posted a 54 and Carmichael shot a round of 60.

Manila's Loren Davison also competed and finished with a round of 71 for the Lady Lions.

BIC will return to action Monday, Aug. 17, playing at the Big Lake Country Club in Manila before completing the week with a match at The Links in Jonesboro.
