Lady Lions fall in finals of district tournament 8-7 to Piggott

Manila rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Lions dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Piggott in the finals of the 3A-3 District Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at Rivercrest.
Manila held a 3-1 lead after three innings, but the Lady Mohawks bounced back, scoring three times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Lady Lions avoided further damage by converting a triple play to end the Piggott rally. The Lady Mohawks came right back in the next inning, plating four more runs, to take what looked to be a comfortable 7-3 advantage heading into the seventh inning before watching the Lady Lions rally fall just one run short.
Lauren Woody led the Lady Lion offense, going 3-4, including a double and two runs scored. Jill Helton also had three hits while Mackenzie Tate singled twice, drove in a run and scored two times. Jordyn Wheeler, Sasha Pannells and Ashley Rothwell all singled and scored runs while Tessa Pannells and Caitlin Holt added RBIs.
Wheeler suffered the loss, working six innings while allowing five earned runs. Wheeler gave up eight hits, fanned seven and issued seven walks.
Manila began the tournament with a 12-2 five inning victory over Corning. The Lady Lions scored four times in both the first and second innings, and added three more in the third. Manila pushed across a single run in the fifth to close out the game.
Manila got on the board in the first inning when Rothwell rapped a two-run single. Tessa Pannells also added an RBI hit in the inning. The Lady Lions stole home twice in the second inning, once each by Wheeler and Sasha Pannells. Woody drilled a two-run double while Rothwell added another RBI single in Manila's three run third.
Wheeler picked up the pitching victory, going all five innings, allowing no earned runs. The sophomore right hander gave up just four hits, struck out five and walked three.
Wheeler also finished the day a perfect 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Woody, Rothwell and Tessa Pannells all went 3-3. Woody finished with two RBI, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Rothwell scored once and knocked in four runs while Pannells finished with three RBI on the afternoon. Holt finished with a pair of singles while Helton and Taylor Hampton also delivered hits. Tate scored a run.
The Lady Lions (8-8) will begin 3A regional play this week in Harrison.
Manila was eliminated from the 3A-3 District Baseball Tournament, ending the Lion's season.
