Lions earn pair of conference diamond wins
Manila gained a pair of 3A-3 conference home baseball victories, shutting out Piggott 9-0 Thursday afternoon before outslugging Hoxie 13-8 Friday.
Brett Sweatman and Gavin Parker combined for a four-hit whitewash of the Mohawks as the Lions picked up their first conference victory of the season. Sweatman pitched four innings, allowing just two hits while striking out 10 batters. Parker finished off the Mohawks, going three innings, allowing two hits while fanning four.
The Lions got two runs in the first, added three more in the second before scoring two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Manila banged out 15 hits against Piggott, led by Joel Burrow's 3-4 performance. Burrow slammed a two-run double in the third inning and finished with four RBI and a run scored. Burrow also added a pair of stolen bases. Caleb Reinhart doubled and tripled, drove in a run, scored three times and stole a base. Kyle Joyner singled twice, drove in a run, scored once and had a stolen base. Logan Hamilton had a pair of singles, crossed the plate three times and added a stolen base. Zac Dearin clubbed a pair of singles, scored once and stole a base. Alex Richard had an RBI double, Seth Grissom doubled and stole a base while Sweatman and Jacob Shumate both added RBI singles.
Hunter Dodd earned the victory in Manila's win over Hoxie. Dodd, who improved to 2-1 on the season, pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run and two hits while recording five strikeouts. Parker finished up, throwing three innings, allowing seven unearned runs on seven hits. Parker fanned one batter.
The Lions jumped on top 3-0 after the first inning before watching the Mustangs put a five-spot on the board in the top of the second to take a two run lead. Hoxie increased its advantage to 7-3, scoring two more runs in the top of the third before the Lions added a single run in their half of the inning to slice the deficit to 7-4. The Mustangs tacked on a run in the top of the fourth to go up 8-4 before the Lions exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-8 lead. Manila pitching shut down the Mustangs the rest of the way as the Lions improved to 2-1 in league play.
Reinhart finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate, cracking three singles and a double. The senior shortstop drove in three runs, scored twice and swiped two bases. Richard went 3-4, including a double, drove in a pair of runs and scored three times. Sweatman had a single, a double, an RBI and scored once. Hamilton had an RBI single and scored a run. Joyner and Dearin both singled and scored runs. Parker singled, Grissom scored twice and stole a base while Burrow scored a run and picked up an RBI. Dodd scored once.
The Lions are scheduled to play Hoxie Monday afternoon on the road before hosting Corning Tuesday in a pair of 3A-3 conference games. Manila will entertain Osceola Thursday afternoon before participating in the Dinger Wood Bat Classic Thursday and Friday.
