MONETTE -- After more than 42 years in the telecommunications business, Skip Layne, area operations manager for CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) in northeast Arkansas and Mississippi, will retire from the company April 2, 2015.

Layne began his career as a lineman for United Telephone in November 1972, working with a five-man line crew in Monette. The crew worked to place copper cables in multiple exchanges to convert customers from eight-party lines to four-party lines. Layne spent the first 17 years in outside plant positions before being promoted into management in 1990. He held several different management positions for the companies he has worked for which include United, Contel, GTE, Verizon, CenturyTel and CenturyLink.

In 2000, CenturyTel purchased the former GTE properties and 18 months later Layne was promoted to area operations manager. The territory he manages stretches from Mountain Home across northern Arkansas to Olive Branch, Mississippi, and south through Stuttgart to Dumas, Arkansas.

"It's been an honor to work with such a fine group of talented supervisors and technicians over the years," Layne said. "I've had the privilege of working in this industry from the party line up through the latest cloud technology. It's been an unbelievable ride. I want to thank all our customers and employees for making it such a pleasure to work all these years."

"Skip has always been very dependable, handling everything that Mother Nature threw at him as well as adapting to technological transformation, while still delivering excellent service to our customers," said Karen Crabtree, CenturyLink vice president of operations. "We wish him the best for a job well done."

Layne and his wife Marla reside in Monette and are planning to spend more time with their children and grandchildren.
