Manila Principal contracts renewed
Manila School Board members, on the recommendation of Superintendent Pam Castor, unanimously approved renewing principal contracts for the 2015-2016 school year. Principals are LeeAnn Helms, middle school; Jason Evers, elementary; and Chris Ferrell, high school.
The regular February meeting was held Thursday evening with president Jeremy Jackson presiding. Members present were Johnny McCain, Brandon Veach, Tracey Reinhart, Tommy Wagner and Danny Robbins.
Board members accepted a 2015-16 school calendar recommended by the majority of teachers and staff.
Ms. Castor informed the board that the Governor signed a bill earlier in the day reducing staff development days from 10 to six. The required contract days remain the same and it will be up to the district on how to use the remaining four days.
The board discussed land issues.
"I appreciate all of the willingness, options and concerns in terms of what they can do from the landowners contacted," Ms. Castor said. She feels all parties will have more information on what they can do.
Castor asked the board to be ready to make a final decision at the March 19 meeting.
"Can we discuss making an offer?" Board member Wagner asked. "If we can come up with a fair offer. We have an idea of what we will have to pay. Land is not cheap."
Ms. Castor pointed out some of the areas may be worth more to the district than others.
Board member Veach said they had asked for offers and they may be getting ahead of themselves.
The board decided to meet in a special meeting as soon as the appraisals are in so they could be more prepared to make a final decision at the March 19 meeting.
"Public acceptance is more important than anything else," Veach said. "If the public doesn't accept it, it won't be done."
The board agreed to meet March 9.
The board voted to add a suggested code of conduct into the food service policy on the recommendation of the superitnendent.
