Valley View edges Riverside 39-37 in Jennings junior girls finals
Valley View survived a last second three point attempt by Riverside to hold on for a heart stopping 39-37 victory to claim the junior girls championship in the annual Gerald Jennings Invitational Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Gosnell.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the contest until the Lady Blazers grabbed a two point lead in the closing seconds of Saturday night's final. Bailey Fisher, who led Riverside with a game high 18 points, squared up for one last attempt at a three pointer as the clock wound down. The shot looked true, but rimmed out as the horn sounded, leaving Valley View with the championship trophy.
Valley View held a slim 9-6 lead after the opening period of play, and increased their margin to 21-16 at the half. Riverside rallied in the third quarter, and took a 29-28 edge heading into the final frame. The Lady Rebels held a 37-32 lead late in the game, but watched as the Lady Blazers charged back in the closing minutes, outscoring Riverside 7-0 down the stretch to grab the win.
Brittney Sain scored eight, Carson Smith tallied seven while Hannah Shinall chipped in four points to round out the Riverside scoring.
Molly Beth Poe topped the Lady Blazers with 14 points.
Riverside reached the finals with a 37-22 win over East Poinsett County Thursday night. Fisher paced the Lady Rebels with a game high 21 points. Sain contributed seven, Shinall had four, Briley Douglas scored four points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Mallory Felton pitched in one point.
Madi Wiggins led the Lady Warriors with nine points.
Riverside downed Rector 30-22 in a 2A-3 conference game Monday night on the road. Smith led the Lady Rebels with eight points, Fisher scored seven, Sain had six, Douglas tallied five while Hailey Carr chipped in three points. Shinall added one point.
Riverside (11-4, 3-0 2A-3) will travel to Earle Monday night before playing host to Marked Tree Thursday night at Lake City.
