Lady Mustangs open season with three straight wins
Buffalo Island Central connected on just enough free throws in the final quarter to hold off visiting Tuckerman, posting a hard fought 43-39 victory in senior girls action Tuesday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex.
The Lady Mustangs held a slim 9-8 advantage after the opening quarter. BIC stretched its lead to 22-18 at the half behind the strong second quarter play of senior point guard Madison Greathouse, who pitched in eight points during the stanza.
The Lady Bulldogs stayed in the game behind the scoring of Hannah Dilday, who finished with a game high 21 points. Dilday teamed with Bridgett Manuel, scoring eight of Tuckerman's nine third quarter points to close to within 30-27 entering the final frame.
BIC worked its way to the foul line in the final period, shooting 22 attempts. But the Lady Mustangs struggled, connecting on just 11, allowing Tuckerman to hang close until the closing seconds. A free throw by Lady Bulldog Deria Ratliff closed the gap to 35-34 with 2:17 to go, but free throws down the stretch by Bailey Owens and Hannah Poe secured the victory for BIC.
Greathouse led the Lady Mustangs with 16 points while Poe chipped in 11. Blaire Wildy scored seven, Megan Webster tallied five while Owens added four. BIC connected on 22-38 charity tosses and drained three treys on the night.
BIC opened its season with an easy 62-30 victory Monday night over Armorel. Hannah Poe poured in a game high 23 points while Bailey Owens added 14 more to lead the Lady Mustangs. Poe and Owens combined to drill seven three pointers on the night. Karoline Thomas scored eight points, Madison Greathouse netted five, Megan Webster and Madison Nowlin contributed four points apiece while Blaire Wildy and Ashley Field chipped in two points each. BIC hit 11-14 free throws and finished with seven three pointers.
Louisa Towery led the Lady Tigers with 13 points. Armorel hit 8-22 free throws and drained a pair of treys.
BIC bolted to a 19-5 lead after the first quarter and led 30-14 at the half. The Lady Mustangs increased their advantage to 50-23 after three periods of play.
BIC finished the week, improving to 3-0 on the year, blasting Abundant Life 52-16 Saturday afternoon at Little Rock. Blaire Wildy pumped in 18 points to lead the Lady Mustangs while Bailey Owens and Hannah Poe added 11 and 10 points respectively. Madison Greathouse chipped in nine points and had eight steals.
In junior high action, BIC (4-1) defeated Abundant Life 55-10 behind the 22 point performance of Heather Sipes.
The Lady Mustangs began the week with a 37-29 come from behind victory over Armorel. BIC trailed 26-25 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Lady Tigers 12-3 to claim the win. Molly Hart topped BIC with 13 points while Heather Sipes added 11. Harley Miller scored nine while Hadyn Hurst added four.
BIC defeated Tuckerman 37-21 Tuesday night. Heather Sipes finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points while snaring 11 rebounds. Molly Hart scored eight, Cadyn Qualls contributed four while Harley Miller and Morgan James added three points apiece. Hadyn Hurst chipped in two points.
BIC will return to action Monday night when they travel to Westside to take on the Lady Warriors. The Lady Mustangs open 2A-3 conference play with a road trip to challenge defending league champion Marmaduke.
