Manila drops season finale 49-12 at Hoxie
Hoxie quarterback Cole Sears fired four touchdown passes to help lead the Mustangs to a 49-12 victory over Manila and a share of the 3A-3 conference championship Thursday night at Hoxie.
Sears, who finished the evening 18-27 for 337 yards through the air, got the Mustangs on the scoreboard early with a 31-yard touchdown strike to James Johnson. Casey Middlekoff's extra point gave Hoxie a 7-0 lead.
Manila answered when Nick Stiles galloped 41 yards to pull the Lions to within 7-6.
Sears came right back with his second touchdown toss, a 56-yarder to Hunter Wilson. Middlekoff's point after pushed the Pony lead to 14-6.
The Lions bounced right back when senior quarterback Kyle Joyner hooked up with Jake Helton on an 80-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. The two point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Lions with a 14-12 deficit.
Hoxie scored on its next two possessions with Sears connecting on a pair of touchdown strikes, the first a 38-yarder to Austen Blocker, and the second coming on an 11-yarder to Johnson. The two scores gave the Mustangs a 28-12 halftime advantage.
Hunter Wilson's pick six just 12 seconds into the third quarter upped the Pony lead to 35-12. Gunner Cook, who rushed 23 times for 133 yards, added Hoxie's final two scores on runs of two and three yards.
The loss dropped Manila's season record to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
