Big Lake Chili Cook-Off 2014

Wilson's Dental team won first place in the chili cook-off and People's Choice.

The 28th annual Big Lake Chili Cook-off, sponsored by the Manila Lions Club, drew a large crowd in spite of the low temperature on Saturday, Nov. 1. Manila Business Women served breakfast at the Depot.

The third annual 5K Chili Pepper Run kicked off at 8 a.m. The overall winner in the male division was Noah Churchill with a time of 20:19 and Jessica Weiss won the female division with a time of 21.50.

Other winners included:

First place winners.

0-9 age group -- Spencer Stutts, first place male; Madison Hitchcock, first place female.

10-12 age group -- Connor Jackson, first place male; Kason Grissom, second place male.

13-15 age group -- Beau Tucker, first place male; Micah Beach, first place female; Morgan Booth, second place female.

20-29 age group -- Scott Townsend, first place male.

30-39 age group -- Chris Haynes, first place male; Rachel Churchill, first place female; Stephanie Willmuth, second place female.

40-49 age group -- Dean Tucker, first place male; Laura Weiss, first place female; Kristen Stutts, second place female.

50-59 age group -- Jerry Shrable, first place male; David Shedd, second place male.

The Duck Pit won first place in the junior division.

Proceeds from the 5K go toward scholarships for Manila seniors.

Chili booths opened at 10:30 ready to serve a variety of chili with plenty to go around.

Approximately 50 booths offered chili, crafts, bake goods, cotton candy, games and much more.

The Kidz Kountry Petting Zoo was on hand giving children the opportunity to pet a variety of animals.

Judy Hampton sang the National Anthem and several songs. Also entertaining were Tommy Morries and Gordon Britt.

Entertainment also included the rebirth of the Miss Mess Chili Cook-Off Pageant featuring FFA members. FFA Adviser Tony Crowell talked about the Miss Mess competition in the past started by long time FFA adviser Dale Poag. Nine "beauties" vied for the title of 2014 Mess Big Lake Chili Cook-Off and the winner was chosen by audience applause. Queen Chase Sharp was crowned.

Lion President Terry Carr thanked everyone for their participation and attendance.

Chili winners in the senior division were:

Southern Boys' Chili, third place $200; Calvary Baptist Church, second place $300; and Wilson Dental Staff, first place $500;

The People's Choice went to the Wilson team and Southern Bancorp won showmanship.

In the junior division Hot Lips Chili won third place $100; The Bent Barrell, second place $200; and The Duck Pitt, first place $300.
