Buffalo Island Central's bid for a second straight Class 2A State Golf Championship fell short when Spring Hill outlasted the Mustangs 244-253 Wednesday afternoon at the Thunder Bayou Golf Club in Blytheville.
The Bears came up with just enough big shots to hold off BIC to join the Lady Bears in a sweep of both the girls and boys state golf championships. Reed Barham led Spring Hill with a round of 79. Garrett Gresham fired an 81 while Garrett Davis carded an 84 for the Bears.
Dax Hurst topped the Mustang golfers with a score of 79, which tied for the third best round of the day. Andrew McFarlin and Miles Gifford carded rounds of 87 for the Mustangs in the play four, count three event. Ryan Stuck also competed for the Mustangs and finished with a round of 91.
Rector's Kade Scott won the individual state title, firing an even par round of 72. Scott was named All-State, along with BIC's Hurst, McFarlin and Gifford.
Riverside's Larry Tilley carded a round of 86 and was also awarded with All-State honors. Cannon Smith competed for the Rebels and finished the day with a score of 99.
"Spring Hill is a good team," said BIC Coach Cary Cossey. "It was one of those days where Spring Hill made the big shots when they had to. I am very proud of our team. We had a really good tournament and an outstanding year. We finished fourth in the Blazer Invitational, won the District Championship and capped it off with a state runner-up finish."
