Smithee home chosen as Monette Yard of the Month
The home of Frank and Val Smithee was chosen as August Monette Yard of the Month. A special recognition ceremony was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18.
City Beautification Committee member Jessica Hurst presented the Smithees with a commemorative certificate, which read "The home of Frank and Val Smithee has been recognized as having the most beautifully landscaped and manicured yard in the entire Monette Community for the month of August 2014." Member Leigh Gathright presented the Smithees with a hanging basket of Wandering Jew.
A yellow and brown Yard of the Month sign was placed in the Smithee front yard to acknowledge the beautification award.
Their spacious stucco home was built in 1917 and has three bedrooms, two baths, living room, kitchen and study. The Smithees enjoy working in their yard, and it shows, but still manage to find time to relax on their wrap around front porch.
They have two children, Stacey (Jeff) Qualls and Wesley (Valerie) Smithee, and three grandchildren.
Their landscaping includes a wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees. Plants include marigold, nandina, crab apple, petunia, hydranga, mum, Japanese Maple, Cleveland Pear, iris, weeping willow, clematis, yellow rose, honeysuckle, moon flower, elephant ear, lambs ear, princess feather, purple fountain grass, impatien, crepe myrtle, azalea, pomegranate, hosta, barberry and day lily and pecan, walnut and redbud trees.
The Smithees are active members of the Monette First Baptist Church.
