Lightning strike kills Etowah teenager

Steven Wayne Sheppard, 16, died Tuesday night, July 1, from apparent injuries from a lightning strike.

Etowah police and first responders went to 887 Arkansas 136 about 8:15 p.m.

Etowah Chief of Police Joe Riney said the teen along with his mother and others were working at a church near his home when a storm came up. Steven, along with another boy, were running from the church to the house.

Chief Rineys said after the storm subsided, Sheppard's mother and others started looking for the teen. He was found face down next to a tree that had been struck by lightning.

The teen was transported to South Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Osceola.

He is the son of Nute and Polly Sheppard and was a student at Rivercrest High School where he was a football player. He enjoyed singing in the church choir.

Funeral services were held Thursday at The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ at Carrolls Corner. Burial was in Garden Point Cemetery.
