Horatio deals Lions heartbreaking 5-4 loss in 3A State baseball tournament
Horatio dealt Manila a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon in Harrison.
Manila took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Caleb Reinhart belted a triple before Jordan Goff slammed a two-run homer to put the Lions on top.
Horatio roared back in the fifth inning, putting together a four run rally to take a 4-2 lead. After scoring one run to slice the Lion advantage to 2-1, Manila appeared to be out of the inning. But a costly error allowed Horatio to bring Hunter Landsdell to the plate with two on and two out. Landsdell promptly clubbed a three-run bomb to give his team a two-run advantage. Horatio added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead as the Lions came to bat in the bottom of the inning with one last chance to stay alive in postseason play.
Reinhart singled to start the Lion seventh and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Goff, his third RBI of the game. Kyle Joyner drilled an RBI single, scoring Goff to cut the Horatio lead to 5-4, but the Lions were unable to score again and watched their season come to an end.
Tanner Vaught went the distance to pick up the win for Horatio. Vaught fanned 10 Lions and didn't walk a batter. Vaught allowed seven hits and four earned runs on the day.
Brett Sweatman started for the Lions and worked four innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits while striking out one and walking two. Shawn Scoggins (10-5) suffered the loss in relief, going three innings, giving up all five Horatio runs, only one of which was earned. The senior southpaw allowed five hits and struck out three batters.
Goff went 2-3, scored twice and drove in three runs while Reinhart singled, tripled and scored twice to lead the Lion offense. Scoggins had a double while Zac Riley and Joyner both singled.
The Lions finished the season 17-10.
Manila reached the quarterfinals, defeating Lavaca in Thursday afternoon's first round action.
Jordan Goff drove in three runs and Shawn Scoggins fired a five-hitter to lead Manila to an 11-2 victory over the Golden Arrows.
Lavaca took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lions came right back, scoring three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Lavaca scored another run in the third to pull to within 3-2, but the Lions put the game away, scoring four times each in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory.
Scoggins (10-4) went all the way, allowing just one earned run while striking out five and walking two.
Jordan Goff finished the day 2-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, along with two stolen bases. Brett Sweatman singled, doubled and scored once while Caleb Reinhart had two hits, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Scoggins was 1-3 with a walk and a run scored. Kyle Joyner singled, scored twice and drove in a run. Jay Kulin walked, scored once and had an RBI while Dillon May and Zac Riley both scored two runs each.
