Riverside falls in district semi-finals

Brandon Towery hits a double to drive in a run for Riverside in their 21-A district contest with marked Tree at Lepanto this past Friday.

Riverside (14-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before a seven run second inning from Marked Tree was too much for the Rebels to bounce back from as the Indians handed Riverside a 9-6 loss in the 2A-3 district tournament in Lepanto. Riverside will advance to play in the regional tournament starting this Friday in Lepanto.

Gavin Stone started the game with an infield single. Devon Austin reached on a fielder's choice and Kollin Stone was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Larry Tilley plated Gavin Stone with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Rebels. Brandon Towery singled to score Austin and Kollin Stone to make it 3-0 Riverside.

The Rebels added another run in the top of second as Gavin Stone reached first after the catcher misplayed the third strike. Austin singled to put runners on first and second. Gavin Stone stole third and scored when the catcher's throw was high to make it 4-0 Rebels. Marked Tree took advantage of five walks and a hit batsman to score seven runs in the bottom of the second. Cody Webb relieved Austin and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. Marked Tree cleared the bases with a double as the runner was out at third trying to stretch it to a triple to make it 7-4 Indians after two innings of play.

Riverside cut the lead to 7-6 in the top of the fourth. Kollin Stone singled and stole second base to get in scoring position. Tilley singled to bring in Kollin Stone and went to second as the outfielder misplayed the ball. Towery doubled to score Tilley cutting the Indians lead to one. Marked Tree tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the sixth to set the final score at 9-6.

Austin took the loss for Riverside pitching one and two thirds of an inning giving up six runs on two hits while walking four and striking out one. Webb pitched the final four and a one third innings allowing three runs on four hits. Webb walked four, struck out two and hit two batters.

Tilley and Towery each had two hits for Riverside. Towery added three RBIs and Tilley finished with two RBIs and a run scored. Gavin and Kollin Stone each had a hit two runs scored and a stolen base and Austin had a hit and scored a run.
