Lady Lions record three softball victories

Manila finished a busy week of softball action, winning three out of five contests. The Lady Lions swept a twin bill from Osceola Monday afternoon at home, winning the opener 16-0 before taking the nightcap 23-2. Manila fell to Corning 6-2 Tuesday afternoon before bouncing back with a 12-2 victory Thursday afternoon at Hoxie. The Lady Lions completed the week on the road at Harrisburg, where they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Lady Hornets.

Manila disposed of the Lady Seminoles with a pair of three inning victories. Jordyn Wheeler won the opener, going three innings, allowing only one hit while striking out seven.

Alli Lambert singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored three times while Deven Burrow added a single, a double and a run batted in to lead the Lady Lion offense. Wheeler drove in a pair of runs while Mackenzie Tate and Hannah Teague also had an RBI apiece. Emily Cook and Tessa Pannells both scored three runs.

Pannells picked up the win in the second game, working two innings of no-hit ball while striking out six batters. Cook pitched the third inning, allowing one hit.

Kailen Shelton tripled, singled twice and drove in three runs while Pannells added a triple and a pair of singles to spark Manila offensively. Haven Bohannan and Amber Gonzalez both singled. Ashley Rothwell had two RBI while Hannah McQueen drove in one run. Pannells, McQueen, Alli Lambert and Lauren Woody all scored three runs each.

Wheeler took the loss in Manila's defeat to Corning Tuesday afternoon. Wheeler went the distance, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out four Lady Bobcats.

Kailen Shelton and Lauren Woody both produced RBI singles with Alli Lambert and Hannah Teague also adding hits. Wheeler and Caitlin Holt scored one run apiece.

Wheeler was the winning pitcher in Manila's 10 run victory over Hoxie. The freshman right hander worked four innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs. Mackenzie Tate belted an RBI triple and also added a single while Kailen Shelton had a pair of hits and two RBI. Lauren Woody singled, doubled and drove in a run while Tessa Pannells bashed a triple. Emily Cook contributed an RBI single while Deven Burrow added a pair of hits. Alli Lambert also singled for the Lady Lions. Wheeler helped her own cause with an RBI.

The Lady Lions finished the week losing at Harrisburg. Manila erased a 1-0 deficit, scoring twice in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Mackenzie Tate got things started with a single, and advanced to third on a double off the bat of Deven Burrow. Lauren Woody drove home Tate with a sacrifice fly before Caitlin Holt gave the Lady Lions the lead with a run scoring single.

Harrisburg came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four unearned runs to steal the win.

Manila (6-11, 4-8 3A-3) will begin district tournament play Friday at Corning.
