Mustangs galloping to state tourney
The Buffalo Island Central Mustangs punched their tickets to the Class 2A State Tournament, slated for later this week at Hampton High School, with a dominant 70-48 victory over the hosting Pangburn Tigers in the first round of the 2A North Regional Tournament Wednesday night.
The Mustangs opened the game up late in the first stanza, finishing the frame on a 10-2 gallop to go ahead 20-9. Austin Pike, the 2A-3 Conference Player of the Year, contributed a
breakaway jam and an and-one bucket inside during the run, which also featured an interior bucket from Nick Bollinger and an Alex Ballin three-pointer. The BIC lead grew to 15, 38-23, heading into intermission.
Pangburn chipped away in the third quarter, closing the gap to as few as eight points late in the frame, but Alan Carmichael shorted out the hosts' surge with a key hoop down low with just over a minute left in the third. BIC led 48-38 heading into the final period.
BIC went on a 16-2 run over the first five minutes of the final frame to cage the Tigers for good. Pike hit a nice turnaround jumper, scored twice in the paint and made three of three from stripe during the pivotal run. Ballin added a layup and three free throws during the stretch, which also featured a Seth Eatmon pull-up jumper.
Pike notched a game-best 28 points in a strong showing for the Mustangs. Ballin added 10 points in the victory. Also scoring for BIC were Trey Depriest 7, Carmichael 7, Bollinger 6, Eatmon 6, Jacob Sanders 5 and Cory Turner 1.
Pangburn was led by Ty Galyan, 17 points, and Aaron Brown, 12 points.
