Mustangs stampede past Cougars to advance to 2A-3 finals
Buffalo Island Central outscored Rector 26-2 to erase a four point second period deficit and went on to easily defeat the Cougars 63-40 in the semifinals of the 2A-3 District Tournament Thursday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette.
Rector led 14-12 after the first quarter and held a 20-16 advantage at the 6:18 mark of the second period when the Mustangs went on their scoring tear. Nick Bollinger scored on the inside and was fouled to pull BIC to within two. Bollinger missed the "and one" but Alan Carmichael was there for the stick-back to tie the game 20-20. Carmichael was fouled on the play, but also missed his free throw, but the Mustangs came up big on the offensive boards once again as Bollinger grabbed the rebound and scored to put BIC up for good, 22-20, with 5:34 left in the half.
Another offensive stick-back by Sanders, followed by a floater in the lane by Seth Eatmon, kept the BIC run going. Eatmon and Pike drilled consecutive three pointers to push the Mustang lead to double digits, before the Mustangs closed the half with a 36-22 advantage. BIC increased its margin to 53-31 after three periods of play and coasted home for the win.
Carmichael topped the Mustang scoring attack with 18 points while Pike was next with 17. Eatmon also notched double digits with 10 points. Bollinger scored seven, Sanders had six, Alex Ballin tallied three while Tyler Myers pitched in two points.
Adam Dinkins scored a game high 20 points to lead Rector.
