Junior Rebels fall in District Tournament
Marked Tree stunned top seeded Riverside 35-24 in the semifinals of the 2A-3 Junior High District Tournament Thursday night at Marmaduke. The Rebels, who had defeated Marked Tree twice during the regular season, fell victim to a horrific shooting night. Riverside shot a paltry 19 percent from the field, including a miserable two for 26 performance from beyond the three point arc. The conference co-champion Rebels were also out-rebounded 30-19 by the Indians.
Marked Tree took a 7-6 edge after the first period and increased its margin to 19-11 at the half. The Indians held a 24-17 advantage after three quarters of play.
Nick Andrews and Paul Colman led the Indians with 12 points apiece. Marked Tree made 8-22 foul shots and hit one three pointer.
Riverside, which finished the year 25-8 overall, got eight points from Gavin Stone and six from Braden Overman. Canon Walling scored four while Dillon Turner, Dylan Davis and Gannon Crews all added two points each. The Rebels hit 2-4 free throws and made a pair of three pointers.
Davis, Overman, Stone and Turner were all named to the 2A-3 All-Conference team.
The junior Lady Rebels fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Marmaduke 52-38. Darra Johnson drilled four three pointers and shared scoring honors with Shandon York, netting 12 points apiece to lead the Lady Greyhounds. Jordan Mays added nine points and 10 assists.
Haven Robertson led Riverside with a game high 15 points while Hattie Milligan added 14 more.
Riverside began the tournament with a 42-25 victory over Cross County Tuesday night. The two teams fought to a 7-7 first period tie before the Lady Rebels claimed a 19-18 halftime edge. Riverside pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Thunderbirds 16-4 to take a commanding 35-22 advantage heading into the final frame.
Bailey Fisher led Riverside with 15 points, including three treys. Haven Robertson was next with 13 points. Hattie Milligan scored nine while Carson Smith added five.
Bri Wright led Cross County with 10 points.
Riverside placed three players on the 2A-3 All-Conference team, including Robertson, Fisher and Milligan.
In senior high action, Riverside fell to Brookland 61-38 Thursday night at Lake City. Rachel Gramling led the Lady Bearcats with 15 points while Bailey Lovrien and Jordan Maynard added 14 and 11 points respectively.
Kenzley Wilson dropped in four three pointers and finished with a game high 16 points to lead the Lady Rebels. Catlyn Sailor also hit double digits, scoring 13. Anna Brickell had seven while Gattlin Hale added two points.
Riverside will open Senior High District Tournament play Tuesday night at 8 p.m. The fourth seeded Lady Rebels will take on ninth seeded Cross County at Monette.
