Timberwolves outmuscle Riverside in NEA quarterfinals

Top seeded Cedar Ridge got 25 points from All-State forward Spencer Reaves and went on to defeat ninth seeded Riverside 63-52 in quarterfinal action of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Basketball Tournament Thursday night at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

The defending Class 2A State Champion Timberwolves had trouble pulling away from the Rebels, leading just 16-11 after the first quarter and 26-18 at the half. But the T-Wolves took control in the third period, outscoring Riverside 25-13 to take a 51-31 advantage into the final frame.

The Rebels pulled to within 31-25 early in the third period on a Caleb Waugh three pointer, but Spencer Reaves countered with his second consecutive three point play to push the Cedar Ridge lead to nine. Cade Crabtree and Austin Reaves followed with back to back treys before Spencer Reaves muscled his way for a two pointer, giving the Timberwolves a 42-27 lead. The brother duos Spencer and Austin Reaves and Cade and Cole Crabtree combined to score the final eight points of the quarter to increase Cedar Ridge's lead to 20.

Riverside showed its grit in the fourth period, outscoring the Timberwolves 21-12 behind the one-two punch of Devon Austin and Kollin Stone, but time ran out on the Rebels, who saw their NEA Tournament hopes fall by the wayside.

Joining Spencer Reaves in double figures for the Timberwolves was Cole Crabtree who scored 16 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Cade Crabtree added 12 points. Cedar Ridge hit 16-23 foul shots and made two three pointers.

Austin paced Riverside with 12 points while Stone scored 10 points and snared 16 rebounds. Waugh and Brandon Sain tallied eight points apiece, Ben Hensley contributed six while Marcos Sheppard and Victor Cerda chipped in four points each. Riverside hit 2-5 free throws and drained six triples on the night.

Riverside advanced to the quarterfinals with a 44-36 win over Highland Saturday, Dec. 21. Devon Austin led the Rebels with 13 points while Brandon Sain added 12.
