Raiders knock Lions from ranks of unbeaten
Winter weather limited Manila to one game last week, as the Lions dropped their first game of the year, a 57-46 decision to the Nettleton Raiders Tuesday night in the Greyhound Classic at Newport.
Stewart Bridger led the Raiders with 15 points while Silas Finch added 12 more.
Scott Eubanks topped the Lions with a game high 18 points while Caleb Reinhart pitched in 13 more. Thomas Davis scored seven, Zac Riley had four while Kyle Joyner and Seth Grissom added two points apiece.
Nettleton held a slim 16-13 lead after the first quarter and stretched their margin to 30-25 at the half. Nettleton increased its lead to 44-36 entering the final frame.
The Lions are scheduled to return to action this week in the Gerald Jennings Tournament beginning Monday at Gosnell.
The Lady Lions scored a pair of victories, defeating Earle 69-63 Monday night on the road before rolling over Armorel 55-24 in the first round of the Gerald Jennings Invitational Tournament Tuesday night at Lepanto.
Kirsten Adcock scored 18 points to lead the Lady Lions past Earle. Emily Cook pitched in 15, including a 13-18 performance from the foul line. Deven Burrow tallied 14 while Kailen Shelton rounded out the Manila double digit scoring attack with 12 points. Lauren Woody contributed six while Charlie Smith and Taylor Harmon added two points apiece.
Shakinia Poole and Lacrondia Williams led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points apiece. Audra Allen chipped in 11 while Alona Brown added 10. Earle finished with four three pointers on the night.
The two teams combined for a whopping 92 free throw attempts on the night. The Lady Lions connected on 29-44 foul shots while Earle hit just 17-48 attempts for a paltry 35 percent.
The Lady Bulldogs led 18-15 after the first break before Manila fought back to take a 35-28 halftime lead. The Lady Lions outscored Earle 18-9 in the third period to grab a 53-37 advantage heading into the final frame. Earle's fourth quarter rally fell short as the Lady Lions remained unbeaten in 3A-3 conference play.
Adcock scored 13 and Shelton had 11 in Manila's victory over Armorel. Cook netted nine, Taylor Teague had six while Burrow, Harmon, Woody and Courtney Scott all added four points apiece.
The Lady Lions are scheduled to return to the hard court Monday night in a key 3A-3 conference contest on the road at Corning. Manila will host Hoxie in another conference matchup Thursday night at home.
