Lady Mustangs hold off Bay 60-50

Buffalo Island Central built an 18 point lead after three quarters before surviving a three point flurry by Bay in the final frame to hold on to a 60-50 victory over the Lady Yellowjackets Thursday night in senior girls action at the Mustang Athletic Complex.

BIC held a 15-7 lead after the first quarter, thanks to the strong inside play by the Lady Mustang tandem of Tayor McKuin and Karo Thomas, who combined for 12 points in the opening stanza.

The Lady Mustangs stretched their lead to 14 points late in the second period, before settling on a 29-16 halftime advantage. BIC closed the half by drilling three consecutive treys, one each from Hannah Poe, Kelsey Strickland and Bailey Owens.

BIC increased its lead to 22 points, 38-16, on a Madison Greathouse bucket midway through the third quarter, before Bay's Kailie Roedel dropped in a pair of free throws, followed by an offensive stick-back by Katie Ferguson to slice BIC's lead to 40-22 entering the fourth quarter.

Bay pulled to within 40-29, scoring seven unanswered points to begin the final period. Ferguson scored four while Roedel drained a long three pointer. The Lady Mustangs answered when Strickland popped her second trey of the night. Back to back buckets by Ashley Field and Greathouse pushed the BIC lead back to 18 with 5:47 to go.

A three point play by McKuin and a three pointer from Greathouse upped the Lady Mustang lead to 56-35 with 4:04 remaining. Bay put on one last charge with a three point barrage, which included two treys apiece from Roedel and Emily Rush, plus another by Ferguson, but Bay could get no closer than the final margin of 10 points.

McKuin led BIC with 16 points while Greathouse also hit double digits with 12. Thomas and Poe scored nine apiece, Strickland had six, Owens netted four while Field and Megan Webster chipped in two points each for the Lady Mustangs.

Ferguson topped Bay with 21 points. Roedel tallied 13 while Rush added 10.

Bay's Whitlee Layne and BIC's Makayla Rogers battle for the basketball Thursday night in junior high non-conference action at Monette.

In junior girls action, BIC held off Bay 50-37. Molly Hart and Heather Sipes led the Lady Mustangs with nine points apiece. Kayla Griffin and Curston Davis scored seven points each. Jona Carmichael netted six, Kensie Walker had five, Makayla Rogers contributed four, Lexi Walls pitched in two while Madison Brown added one point.

Abby Frisby led Bay with 18 while Whitlee Layne added 11 points.

BIC traveled to Amorel Monday night and came home with a 56-44 victory over the Lady Tigers.

Taylor McKuin poured in a game high 22 points to lead the Lady Mustangs. Karo Thomas also notched double digits, scoring 10. Hannah Poe notched eight, Madison Greathouse tallied seven, Cidnie Broks netted four, Ashley Field had three while Natalie Campbell chipped in two points.

Tia Sullins paced the Lady Tigers with 17 points while Madison Gifford added 11 more.

In junior high action, BIC downed Armorel 43-25. Molly Hart led BIC with 14 points while Heather SIpes added nine. Cadyn Qualls scored six while Kayla Griffin, Curston Davis, Jona Carmichael, Makayla Rogers, Madison Brown and Kensie Walker all added two points apiece.

The Lady Mustangs will return to the hard court Monday night when they travel to McCrory to begin 2A-3 conference play. BIC will play host to defending conference champion Marmaduke Thursday night at the MAC.
