Fourth grade Lions complete unbeaten season
Manila's fourth grade Lions completed the 2013 football season with an undefeated 6-0 record, outscoring its opponents by a margin of 124-12. The Lions shut out Trumann, Cedar Ridge, East Poinsett County and Marked Tree while defeating Harrisburg 18-6 and Gosnell 30-6.
"We had a great year," said Lion coach Johnny McCain. "We had a total of 23 kids on our team. We were able to win the battle up front in every game. Both our offensive and defensive lines dominated, and I thought the line play set the tempo for the whole team."
The young Lions operated out of the no-huddle offense, relying on quarterback Jake Baltimore and running back Dustin Clark. "Jake is a real smart kid who did a great job running the offense and Dustin had about a 14 yard per carry average. All in all, we had seven different players score touchdowns this year, which is really something in a six game season," McCain said.
The Lions also relied on a strong defense, which did not allow consecutive first downs the entire season. "Our defensive play was just great," McCain added.
"In my 31 years of coaching, this was probably the most dominating team I've coached," McCain said. "It was a sheer pleasure and a lot of fun to coach these kids. Everyone got to play and it was really just a great season."
Assisting McCain were Chris Davison and Jeremy Dogan on defense while Jason Baltimore aided on offense.
