Board member loves reading
Mississippi County Library System Board of Trustees member Romona Thieme, of Manila, has always loved reading, which is why supporting the libraries in the county is so important to her.
Thieme has been on the Mississippi County Library System's Board for about five years but has had a love of reading since she was a child.
"Libraries are important to me because I love books," Thieme said. "I have always loved to read. I remember as a child participating in the summer reading programs offered by the Craighead County Library. I believe my husband and I have passed that along to our daughter, who has always loved to read. Someone once told me that it was not so important what you read, but that you read each day."
Thieme said she is proud to be a part of supporting and making decisions for the seven libraries in Mississippi County. She said they provide a valuable service to each community in the county and with the addition of more electronic services can reach more people.
"The biggest change that I have seen has been the use of computers, the online card catalog and the ebooks," Thieme said. "Many people are very busy with work and family activities, and the online services are easier for them. So people may not be able to get to the library but can still be readers and supporters of the library."
Thieme went on to say she hopes the public will always see the library is a place that can benefit the whole family. She said the books, magazines, newspapers, computer use and other services are available to everyone.
"Plus the libraries serve as meeting places for groups and organizations," Thieme said.
Thieme hopes the library system can continue to grow and meet the needs of the citizens in the county and that people of all ages enjoy the many programs offered at the libraries.
