Hornets sting Lions 39-8 in senior high football action

Harrisburg quarterback Conner Hagg threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead the Hornets to a 39-8 thumping of Manila Friday night in 3A-3 conference football action at Lion Field.

The Hornets scored on their first possession, putting together a six play, 48-yard drive, capped off by Devon Jarrett's one yard touchdown plunge with 8:26 left in the opening quarter. The point after attempt failed.

Harrisburg struck pay dirt again when Jeremy Martin scampered in on a three yard run with 1:10 left in the first period. The two point conversion try failed, leaving the Hornets ahead 12-0.

Hornet linebacker Arizona Sharp pounced on a Lion fumble at the Manila 30 yard line, setting up Harrisburg's third touchdown of the night. Hagg connected on an 11-yard completion to Ayson Lamb and a 15-yarder to Jarrett, setting up the Hornet quarterback's five yard touchdown run with 11:29 left in the first half. The point after was good, giving Harrisburg a 19-0 lead.

Harrisburg took advantage of another Lion turnover when Dillon Russell picked off a Luis Maldonado pass at the Manila eight yard line. Hagg wasted little time capitalizing, hooking up with Martin on an eight yard touchdown strike with 10:24 left before intermission. The PAT gave the Hornets a 26-0 bulge.

Disaster struck the Lions on their next play from scrimmage, when a loose ball was scooped up by Harrisburg's Gavin Stevens, who rambled 10 yards for a Harrisburg touchdown, giving the visitors a 32-0 advantage.

The Hornets put an exclamation point on their first half scoring barrage when Hagg found Lamb streaking down the right sidelines for a 77-yard touchdown bomb at the 6:29 mark of the second quarter. The point after gave Harrisburg a 39-0 halftime lead.

Manila finally got on the scoreboard, putting together a seven play, 60-yard drive to open the third quarter, highlighted by Jake Helton's 40-yard dash. Helton capped off the Lion scoring march with an eight yard touchdown run. The two point conversion play set the final score at 39-8.

Hagg finished the night seven for 13 through the air for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Hornet signal called also rushed seven times for 52 yards and another score. Lamb caught three passes for 96 yards and a touchdown while Martin added a pair of receptions for 28 yards and a score.

Helton ran eight times for 52 yards and a touchdown while Gavin Parker had 16 carries for 40 yards to lead the Lions offensively.

Manila will return to conference action Friday night when they travel to face league leading Hoxie at Mustang Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
