Childress School holds "Friends Forever" reunion

Former Childress High School classmates filled the Buffalo Island Central West Elementary auditorium Saturday, Aug. 31, for their "Friends Forever" reunion from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Childress School was located north of Monette on Highway 139 and had students attending classes there from 1921-1961. Childress consolidated with Monette High School in 1961, and Monette consolidated with Leachville in 1984 to form Buffalo Island Central School District.

Classmates, teachers and school staff were honored during the reunion. Jim Finley, from the Class of 1960, served as master of ceremonies.

Engraved bricks presented to oldest teacher present Betty Calloway, oldest graduate Francis Adams, traveled fartherest Neala Hoch, and oldest classmate James Miller.

Clyann Leonard presented special recognition for attendance, scholarship, traveling and age. The Yates and Anderson families each had four siblings in attendance. Other awards included: Hunter Travis recipient of 2013 CHS Scholarship; Betty Calloway was oldest teacher present; Amanda Copeland and Frances Adams were oldest graduates; Neala Hoch and Louise Younce traveled the farthest; and James Miller was oldest classmate.

Special entertainment was provided by Perry Chambers, Ken Long and The Soggy Bottom Boys, which consisted of W.T. Bibb, Frank Leonard and Ted Finley.

Veterans W.T. Bibb and Bill Craig post the colors at reunion.

American Post Commander Larry Rolland led the pledge to the flag, presentation of colors and played Taps during the salute to veterans. W.T. Bibb and Bill Craig were flag bearers.

William Piercy led the memorial service as representatives from each graduating class placed candles on the stage in memory of deceased classmates.

Yates family had four siblings present, Jerry Yates, Thelma Stanfill, Charlotte Lasley and J.D. Yates.

The financial and scholarship reports were given by Raye Finley and the yearbook, website and Memorial Marker reports were given by Nan Snider.

The Childress Reunion Committee present led the group in singing the school alma mater at the close of the reunion. Members included Martha Baldridge, Jo Ball, W.T. Bibb, Jim Braden, Barbara Brinkley, Janis Chambers, Jim Finley, Raye Finley, Gene Gathright, Norma Gathright, Ernestine Harrell, Pat Hawkins, Jacquelyn Howell, Clyann Leonard, Ann Nuckles, William Piercy, Nan Snider, Claudine Sparks, Bill Stacy, Jerry Stacy, Naomi Wallace, Millie Wimberley, Fern Woodsmall and Rudy Woodsmall.

The next Childress reunion is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 5, 2016.
