Pirates shanghai junior Lions 30-8 in season opener
Gosnell scored touchdowns in every quarter and raced to a 30-8 victory over Manila in junior high football action Thursday night at Lion Field in Manila.
The Pirates scored the season's first touchdown through the air with a 30-yard strike from quarterback Tabari Herron to wide receiver Termaine Anderson. The touchdown capped an eight play, 70-yard drive with 2:09 left in the first quarter. Ronnie McShan ran in the two point conversion, giving Gosnell an 8-0 lead.
After a Manila three and out, the Pirates struck again, getting excellent field position on a 22-yard punt return by Herron. It took Gosnell just five plays to score again, this time on Herron's two yard scamper up the middle with 3:28 left in the first half. Herron's two point conversion pass to Matthew Miller gave the Pirates a 16-0 lead.
Manila put together its best drive of the half on the ensuing possession, thanks to a 33-yard romp by halfback Timmy Smith, setting up the Lions with a first down at the Pirate 37 yard line. But a Patrick Tanner incompletion on fourth down ended the Manila threat, and Gosnell took a 16-0 lead into the dressing room at the half.
Gosnell scored early in the third quarter when the Lions had a punt partially blocked. The Pirates' Albert Boyd scooped and scored from 20 yards out at the 6:05 mark. Peyton Thompson's two point conversion run upped the Gosnell lead to 24-0.
Tyler Johnson's 25-yard run, followed by a 19-yard dash by Smith, gave the Lions a first down at the Pirate 17 late in the third period. But after a pair of lost yardage plays, the Lions faced fourth and long and failed to convert, giving the ball back to Gosnell.
McShan bolted 45 yards with 7:01 left in the game, giving Gosnell a 30-0 lead.
Manila finally got on the board, putting together a five-play, 62-yard drive, capped off by Johnson's 20-yard ramble around left end with 4:12 to go in the game. Logan Hamilton accounted for 33 yards in the drive while Tanner had an eight yard run. Tanner made good on the two point conversion to set the final score at 30-8.
Johnson led Manila with nine carries for 47 yards while Smith rushed six times for 42 yards before exiting the game with a shoulder injury. Hamilton had two carries for 33 yards and one three yard reception. Tanner completed one of six passes for three yards. The Lions finished with 119 yards rushing and 122 yards total offense on the night.
McShan carried two times for 48 yards and a touchdown, and had a 75-yard scoring run on the game's first play wiped out by a penalty. Rodale Jones had four carries for 35 yards while Herron finished the night with five totes for 34 yards. Herron also completed both of his passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. The Pirates had 146 yards rushing and 197 yards total offense on the night.
Manila will try to pick up its first win of the year when they travel to Paragould to take on the junior Rams Thursday night.
