Edgar Eugene "Gene" Carpenter, 84, of Manila, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at his home. Born May 18, 1929, in the family home, in the Yellow Banks area near Manila, he was the son of the late Edgar Theodore and Ethel Green Carpenter and had been a lifelong Manila resident. He was a retired trucker for the Watkins Motor Lines in West Memphis and enjoyed his off time with family and friends duck hunting on Big Lake.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Woolard Carpenter; a son, Elvis Carpenter; three brothers and a sister.

He is survived by two sons, Larry E. Carpenter of Manila and Don Charles Carpenter of Denver, Colo.; four daughters, Deborah Farrow of Jackson, Mo., Dianne McCallie and Lesley Palmer, both of Manila, and Julia Kay Carpenter of Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Vernon Carpenter of Batesville, Larry Carpenter of Eureka Springs and Jack Carpenter of Monett, Mo.; two sisters, Joann Browning of Manila and Bonnie Reams of Jonesboro. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Howard Funeral Service Chapel in Manila with Rev. Ray Dill officiating. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at the funeral home.
