Arkansas Heat wins fourth National Title
Once again the Arkansas Heat softball team returned to northeast Arkansas with a national title.
Arkansas Heat, established in 2006, played in the 16 and Under Girls' A Southern Fast Pitch Tournament held in Lawton, Okla., July 30 -- Aug. 4.
This win made the team's fourth national title. They also have a national runner-up title and made it in the top 10 the other years.
The team is made up of girls from the area and is sponsored by Kenny and Beverly Lomax.
The team is coached by Rex Nelson and Harold Burnside.
Three team members, Chase Nelson, Braxton Burnside and Katie Lomax, have played on the team since the start. Other 2013 team members include Claire Brown, Morgan Felts, Kelsey Gross, Peyton Carter, Kristen Dimpsey, Kelsey Wilson, Logan Vaughn and Alexus Lawellin.
The team won two of the four Showcase Tournaments this year working their way to the nationals. The tournaments were held in Kansas City, Nashville, Oklahoma City and Mississippi. College scouts also attend these tournaments.
"All of the girls have been offered different college scholarships," Lomax said. "Several have committed to play at various colleges. One of our goals when we started in 2006 was to give the players the opportunity to play college softball if they chose to."
The girls played in 107 degree weather at Lawton consuming a case of water every game. They worked hard and never gave up, Lomax said.
Arkansas Heat worked their way through five straight wins in the extreme heat after starting off with an 11-6 loss to American Freedom on Saturday morning of the tournament.
The team won the next five games, including two over the previously unbeaten Xtreme team from Greenbrier, Ark., to capture the title.
