Peach time in Leachville
Swihart Orchards in Leachville has several varieties of peaches ready. Leon Swihart, third generation owner, estimated peaches will be plentiful for about two more weeks.
He said it was an unusual year. It didn't rain and the peaches did not get ripe when expected. Due to a five inch recent rainfall, all of the varieties are ripening at the same time.
Among the varieties at Swihart's are Loring, Alberta and New Haven.
The peach shed will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. until peaches begin to run short. In addition to peaches, Swihart has locally grown watermelons.
The peaches are picked every morning and ready for sale at the shed or customers are welcome to pick their own.
"We have people who come every year," Swihart said. "I had one lady come this year from Texarkana and another called from Indiana wanting to know when the peaches would be ready. My phone has been busy and I want everyone to know we should have plenty of peaches for at least the next two weeks."
A box of peaches makes a great gift. It is like Christmas in July when the peaches are ready.
Swihart expressed his appeciation to all of his customers who have supported the orchards throughout the years.
Swihart's pecans will be ready the middle of November. He said they look good at this point but as always they will have to wait and see
Swihart Orchard in Leachville has been in the family for over 80 years.
